2. APAHW Essay Submission Contest

For 19 years, APAHW has united Asian Americans on campus and provided them with the opportunity to both celebrate and reflect on their cultural accomplishments. Students come together for this week every fall, and with them they bring their diverse backgrounds and open minds. Similarly, UPAAN chapters host programs and events that unite Asian American alumni and open channels of communication between former undergraduates. The cultural organization ensures that alumni remain connected to the University and to Asian American students at Penn.

For the first time, the two groups are collaborating on an Essay Contest with a $250 First Place Prize and $100 Second Place Prize. Submissions to the contest should answer the question, “How have you redefined yourself as an Asian American?” and be a 500-1000 word work of prose. We ask that entrants do not submit college essays. The deadline for submission is Friday, October 14th, 2011 at 11:59PM. Please email submissions or any questions to board@apahw.org.

Thank you, and we hope to see you at APAHW events, coming up from October 16 – 22, 2011. Keep an eye out for more details, and find out more at www.apahw.org!

3. WAX Journal Article Submission Contest

Do you have an interesting story regarding your experiences in Asia? Maybe it was a culture clash, language misinterpretation, or serious summer training program that you’d like to share?

Whatever anecdote it may be, send it in to WAX Journal for a chance to be a feature article! Best submission wins $50 CASH and gets featured in our Fall 2011 publication. Top 3 responses will also be published in our Journal.

General Guidelines: Describe an extraordinary experience you have had working, living, or traveling in Asia. Limit of 500-750 words and must be received by 11:59 p.m. October 16, 2011. Please email responses to cren@sas.upenn.edu

About WAX

The Wharton Asia Exchange (WAX) is a professional student-run organization of the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. It was founded with the intention of bridging the gap between the Penn community and the Asian business world. By providing the requisite resources to increase the understanding of Asian business, WAX aims to fulfill the aspirations of students interested in making a difference in Asia. The fast-growing, dynamic environment in Asia opens up limitless opportunities which WAX helps bring to the world’s brightest young minds and enables them to establish lasting relationships with their Asian counterparts. This bond will allow the exchange of knowledge, the development of trust, and the foundation of a more fully integrated global business environment.

Our Mission

To offer students opportunities for cultural and business exchange in Asia;

To provide a platform for businesses, governments, and universities to access undergraduate and graduate students; and

To develop a community of peers and mentors through professional development and shared leadership experiences.

We Want to Help You…

Rub Shoulders with Industry Insiders: WAX offers you opportunities to host and coordinate professional events both on-campus and abroad, allowing you to learn more about Asian business from the top industry leaders. Joining WAX is the perfect way to develop a network of valuable contacts to help you into the Asian business world.

Get Rewarded in a Meritocracy: WAX wants its members take as much responsibility as they can handle. All board positions are elected by the General Body based on qualifications, not tenure.

Be a Part of a Growing Community: WAX encourages interaction between all members and hosts various social events where you can get to know your peers.

Develop Your Career Goals: WAX connects you with upperclassmen members, MBA mentors, and other important resources to help take you where you want to go.

Start Something Momentous: WAX plans several events throughout the year, but is always looking for new initiatives. We want to help you realize your ideas.

Please attend one of our two informational sessions on either Tuesday, January 18th, 2011 at 8pm in JMHH F90 and Wednesday, January 19th, 2011 at 8pm in JMHH F90. If you are unable to attend either session, please feel free to email Charlie Gao at charlieg@seas.upenn.edu for any questions you have before submitting an application.

The recruitment process consists of an application and an informal interview. The application form is used to gauge interest and to help us recommend committees for your placement. We use this interview as an opportunity to explain the specific responsibilities of the committees you are interested in and to answer any questions you have about our organization and what role you can fulfill.

What We Look For

The most important quality in a prospective member is genuine enthusiasm and an interest in Asia. There are seven distinct committees in WAX.

Professional: Focuses on educating students and expanding opportunities to learn all areas of Asian business, not just in career development. While we do hold events by companies in fields such as financial services, we also organize an MBA Mentoring program each year, as well as our semi-annual Spotlight Asia event.

Spring Trip: Plan the logistics of the annual spring trip (during Penn’s Spring Break) to an Asian city and contact the companies that will be visited on the trip (committee members are not required to go on the trip, but many do each year).

Wharton Asia Journal: Members of the committee have the opportunity to interview and write articles about various people, cover WAX events and other related events, design the layout of the magazine, and solicit advertising from local and corporate businesses.

Marketing: Promotes the WAX brand to school, corporate and professional relations. Members have an artistic vision and cultural awareness, which enables students to develop their creative skills in a business setting.

Financial Affairs: Manages the entire WAX budget. The committee is responsible for approving every budget request in order to ensure proper funding for all events. Each member of Financial Affairs is assigned a specific committee to manage and delegate budgetary funding. Externally, the committee also represents WAX to umbrella organizations such as Wharton Council and Student Activity Council for funding.

Human Resources: In charge of the recruitment process for WAX, and focuses on community development of WAX members. Each member will be in charge of planning and executing their own social events, as well as helping to organize the WAX Mentor program.

Corporate: Leads WAX’s efforts in establishing and maintaining corporate relationships with the top firms in Asia, many of which recruit on campus each fall. Some events the Corporate Committee is in charge of include the annual International Opportunities Fair in partnership with Penn Career Services, individual corporate presentations, and Asia Business 101.
